Sustainable, Durable, Beautiful
Pre-finished solid Australian Cypress flooring.
Barefoot Friendly™ & Sock Friendly™: All our Australian Cypress flooring is export quality Select Tight Knot grade (STK). Our PRE-finished Australian Cypress flooring is filled and sanded before any of the satin finish is applied during manufacture. This closes any voids around knots and irregularities in the flooring wood grain. Other suppliers of pre-finished Australian Cypress flooring skip this step. Our flooring is then sanded between each of the 7 layers of satin finish. These steps give our pre-finished Australian Cypress flooring a smooth feel and look.
Hardness: Australian Cypress flooring has a Janka hardness rating of 1375. By comparison, American White Oak has a Janka hardness rating of 1360, and American Red Oak is softer with a Janka hardness rating of 1290. Teak is even softer - 1155.
Provided that you take proper steps to care for your floor, you should have years of comparable wear of your floor.

Durable Beauty - knots, grain, color and contrast: Australian Cypress wood is predominantly golden. However, variations in Australian Cypress color range from cream colored sapwood and yellow-gold to brown heartwood. Australian Cypress has closed and tight grain with large and small knots which are darker than the surrounding wood. Australian Cypress is a durable, warm, inviting looking wood which is often labelled rustic, but it can look great in more formal settings. It also lends itself to a "zen" look where the character-rich beauty of the wood is part of the ethos of the room.
(And by the way... Just to clear up a small confusion out there in the market place: there's really no such thing as totally, 100% "knot-free" (a.k.a. "clear") Australian Cypress flooring or lumber. If you are looking for a knot-free look, consider one of our other Australian flooring species at our sister site: AustralianWoods.com .)
Uses: With a Janka hardness rating of 1375, Australian Cypress is considerably harder than hardwoods like Teak (Janka 1150) and Red Oak (Janka 1290), and slightly harder than White Oak (Janka 1360). This hardness gives Australian Cypress its durability, density, and nail holding ability. Australian Cypress is also termite resistant. These attributes, along with its visual appeal, have made Australian Cypress an attractive choice for flooring, feature finishes, and cabinetry.
Ethical: We source all our Australian Cypress solely through a sustainably managed Australian forest and mill which holds the Australian Forestry Standard accreditation, and are members of the American WPMA, NWFA and IWPA who are accredited with the Australian Forestry Standard.
Where it comes from: Where our Australian Cypress comes from is pinpointed in this map. Australian Cypress (sp. callitris glauca), often also called Australian Cypress Pine, is a conifer native to the eastern states of Australia. The two main forests of Australian cypress are inland New South Wales and Southern Queensland. Australian Cypress is logged on a sustainable basis as part of the Australian Government's Australian Farm Forestry Program. |
